Teacher of the Month!

Math vs. English. English vs. Math. Which subject is more important? The debate has gone on for years and will continue for years to come. Stephen Ford doesn’t worry about arguments like that, however, because he knows how important this subject is. You might ask, “What does he teach?” And you’d be shocked to learn the answer: he’s a PE teacher at Farmersville Junior High School in Farmersville, CA

“What?!? PE?!?”

tom ex jan 2018That’s right. But Stephen isn’t one of those “Let ’em play dodgeball five times a week” types of PE teachers. He works hard procuring funds from multiple sources and he’s created a fitness class that is data driven and full of various technologies . One of the various pieces of technology that he uses is a Prowise interactive flat panel. All of Stephen’s data over the years has shown him that the students who are physically fit have higher GPAs. Maybe Stephen’s right…the most important subject is PE because it shows who will be successful in other classes.

ELB: “Stephen, is there anything you’d like to add to what’s written above?”

Stephen: “Check out my website at moverefit.com and view the vision for the future of my program as well as the various projects, articles, collected data and other interesting information.”

ELB: “Could you explain a little more the correlation between physical fitness and success in school?”

Stephen: “According to several studies conducted by neuroscientists, there is a neurological change in the brain due to physical exercise. The body and brain together construct learning pathways and as a result, students generally experience academic achievement. My research and data collected with the Movere Fit program indicates, on average, that athletically fit students show a higher GPA by being in the fit zone.”

ELB: “You’ve created an app to help students and parents track the students’ fitness performance. Could you tell us a little more about that app?”

Stephen: “The data app I developed (Movere Fit) tracks performance indicators such as GPA, SBAC results, fitness levels, and analyzes them with the app’s assessment scoring system. These performance indicators are retained in the student’s profile page for teachers, administrators, parents or other professionals to review and analyze to determine that the students’ performance goals and overall health are being met. It also evaluates and ranks groups, classes and individuals for a detailed analysis and comparison for all students participating in the program. The element of competition within the program encourages top performances and is used as a tool in determining the fittest groups and students as well as the scholar athletes of the year.  The app also automatically calculates student assessment percentages along with a bar graph analysis and prepares it for PE teachers to submit for student grade. In conclusion, this curriculum has shown that GPAs increase, fitness levels increase, energy, motivation and confidence increase and body fat decreases.”

ELB: “You have a Prowise interactive flat panel in your fitness lab. Are there different ways that you use the device? How does it add value to your class?”

Stephen: “The Prowise interactive panel is a must in our fitness lab. It allows me to connect and display the data from the Movere Fit app to students as we analyze data. It also allows the students to work on those projects as they interact with the unique feature of placing the panel in a table position so groups can work on it simultaneously. The ProQuiz software feature is a handy tool where I can quiz students as I check for understanding. If that wasn’t enough, I like the option that students can use their own devices while they interact with the panel and the Prowise tools for extended learning in math, science, history, etc. Lastly, the collaboration feature Prowise has developed is important as I seek teacher feedback and lesson plans within my own discipline.”

ELB: “What is it you like most about Prowise or ELB?”

Stephen: “The reason I chose Prowise over the other companies was their customer service. They will always respond before the end of the day if not sooner. My Educational Consultant, Brent Smith, has given me access to his cell phone number where I can reach him instantly when in a pinch.

ELB: Any final thoughts?”

Stephen’s Mission Statement–  To increase academic and fitness success through physical fitness training, body composition awareness, data and project based learning  in a technology equipped fitness laboratory.
